Whether or not you can be banned for BUYING duped items, I can't say. However, you should strongly consider NOT buying them, as in the past Anet not only banned people who bought and sold dupes, but they also deleted a bunch of the duped items. So, even if you won't get banned, you could easily be throwing your money away.

It's forbidden to buy/sell duped items.

Question:
Arent all "duped" items in these days "customized"??
Wont u be able to distinguish these from others? By looking at the customization.
This thread is actually just about those "customized" sapphires, etc...

Though IF duping exists, and IF they can actually dupe many items, think this:

DUPED strongboxes can turn into noncostumized minis, tonics, weps ect

DUPED coffers turns into noncostumized mallyxes and other gems,armbraces..

DUPED Flames/golden flames of balthazar turning into noncostumized zkeys

DUPED zaishen coins turns into noncostumized keys, tomes, zkeys, envoys ect.

IF that works, we got a huge problem(with everything)+ knowing what is duped and what is not.

I have just one question:
If you buy an "customized for" item, you know that is dupped, and anet can punish you..ok perfect..
BUT if you buy something that look LEGIT, like a normal ecto or normal zkey, but they discover that is dupped, can they ban you?

If you pay a resonable price for it then it is most likely not duped. If you however pay MUCH lower then the normal price they might act, since it quite clear that you would have known said item was duped.

Ok that is correct, by the way if you pay a resonable price and the item is dupped because it look legit?
What they do in this case?

If they can't prove that the person bought it knowingly, probably nothing.

Someone buying several stacks of ectos at the moment would probably look rather suspect though, even if they payed a "normal" price.

A reasonable price to buy unded mid-end (annual golds and greens) pets doesn't exceed 30k - if you want to resell them for a quick and nice profit. It's been the common way of making money for years, and no one can ban you simply because you've bought something way below its 'market price', which is completely imaginary.
Sure, if someone offers you five hundred ectos for 2k each something's fishy, same if someone wants to sell you seven Kuunavangs for 100k total, but taking advantage of people not knowing the 'market values' of items != knowingly buying duped stuff. Last time i checked, exploiting the market and vulturing on less market-interested people wasn't a bannable offence.

The OPs question is whether he'll get banned for buying a single customised sapphire (or other oddity got thanks to duping). I'd guess that no - and even if, it'd be pretty easy to convince the support to lift the ban, with all the history of collecting oddities and not really partaking in the whole bug exploitation on not only massive, but even noticeable scale.
I wouldn't buy a stack of customised materials, though, even for their 'real value'; even if it doesn't make you get hit with the banhammer, said stack will most likely, eventually, get deleted.

Yep. Pretty much everything of value can be "cleaned" because it is found in some container or traded for tokens.

How can they tell you knew?

They can also check chat logs.

Expect a lot of transactions involving potentially duped items to be checked for a while, and chat logs between the trader and the buyer to be analyzed. This is likely the way some purchasers of duped Mallyx miniatures were caught.

Still, I believe duped sapphires will be soon removed from the game anyway. They can easily track and identify them, as opposed to perfectly-legit-looking-but-actually-duped miniatures.

- hey, dude, why are you selling this mallyx so cheap, is it duped?
+ of course it is, just as fifteen more! let your guildies know!
- oh okay, thanks

OR

- meh, i'm not buying that salma, it smells of a dupe, 30k is way too low to be legit
+ no come on, i just got it from doing wik and want to sell it and get more white minis for hom, i don't need a gold pet anymore, and i don't want to waste time selling it
- [pays 70k just because of banhammer paranoia]

Remove it from your inventory, it's still a duped item.

According to some, it depends on how much you've payed for it

They remove it.

Look, there is a duping wave going on and it will get fixed if it hasn't been already. Smart choice is to buy diablo 3 (in 10 hours!!!!!!!! OMFG) and play that for a few weeks until things settle down.

Yeah ok..but as i said there is a way to avoid them..i make an example so its easier to understand..
lets suppose i have over 1000k and i want conver them to ectos, like always.
Ill go then to kamadan and i spam the WTB xxe=100k, lets suppose they worth 8k to merchant, so the price will be -500g/-1k at best.
So, ill try to buy 14/15e = 100k...for now all ok.
lets suppose someone selling them for that price, that is a normal price. I buy them and they look Legit (no customized or something else).
So now, i got the ectos that someone traded me for a normal and legit price. But let suppose they were "dupped", how can i know if there is nothing strange in them? Anet can ban me anyway even i bought them in good faith?
And the Big question is, the "dupped" ectos/Zkeys/Sapphire/Rubies can look "normal" or there is always the phrase "customized for xxxxx"??

That for sure, finally i can sell items for real cash in Diablo III, 1 extra reason to buy it
